Fatal Petersburg shooting death of Richard Withers – Obituary
Richard Withers, 40, of Petersburg, was identified as the victim of a shooting that took place Saturday at a residence just east of the city.
Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon confirmed that Withers was pronounced clinically dead at 5:12 p.m. on Sunday. He had been transported from his home by ambulance to Springfield Memorial Hospital after sustaining a gunshot wound.
The Illinois State Police have not yet released any new details regarding the other individual involved in the shooting, which occurred in the 15000 block of Tice Road shortly after noon on Saturday.
In response to the tragedy, the PORTA School District encouraged students to wear camouflage clothing as a show of support for the Withers family. Superintendent Shannon Duling stated that counselors and therapy dogs were made available in schools to assist students and staff coping with the loss.
Authorities have scheduled an autopsy, and the case remains under investigation.
