Fatal Monterey County U-Haul crash death of Sequan McKensie Taylor – Obituary
Two individuals lost their lives in a devastating accident involving a U-Haul van late Tuesday night, February 4, 2025, in Monterey County. Authorities have identified the victims as 35-year-old Sequan McKensie Taylor of Tacoma, Washington, and 27-year-old Kayla Marie Smith of Spanaway, Washington.
The crash occurred at approximately 11:47 PM on Highway 101 near Jolon Road. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), 38-year-old Anthony Harvey was operating a 2023 Ford Transit U-Haul van, traveling south at 65 miles per hour. For reasons still under investigation, he lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the highway and overturn down a steep embankment. The van eventually landed upright.
At the time of the crash, three passengers were inside the vehicle. The front-seat passenger sustained serious injuries, while Taylor and Smith, who were in the rear, suffered fatal injuries. Emergency personnel transported Harvey to Sierra Vista Regional Hospital, where it was determined that he was under the influence of drugs.
Following medical clearance, Harvey was taken into custody and booked into Monterey County Jail. He now faces multiple charges, including murder and DUI resulting in bodily harm.
Families of victims in fatal crashes may have the option to pursue wrongful death claims, which can assist with expenses such as medical bills, funeral costs, and lost income.
However, insurance companies often attempt to minimize payouts, making it crucial for families to seek legal assistance to ensure they receive fair compensation.
