Grant Withers dies in fatal shooting near Petersburg

Fatal Petersburg shooting death of Grant Withers – Obituary

Grant Withers, a 15-year-old student and athlete from Petersburg, Illinois, tragically passed away on February 1, 2025, after sustaining a fatal gunshot wound at his family’s home. Withers’ death has left his community and school in deep sorrow as they remember the young man’s kindness and competitive spirit.

Known for his athleticism and love of the outdoors, Grant was initially hesitant to join the basketball team, preferring to hunt instead. However, his potential as an athlete did not go unnoticed, and he was supported by his coach and school staff.

In honor of Grant, students at PORTA High School wore camouflage clothing to school, a gesture that extended to various local teams, including the girls’ basketball team and other schools in the area.

Grant’s tragic passing also claimed the life of his father, Richard Withers, 40, who also died from a gunshot wound. The incident, which occurred at their home in the 15000 block of Tice Road, is under investigation by Illinois State Police. Counseling services and therapy dogs were made available to students at PORTA to help them cope with the emotional impact of the loss.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to support the Withers family with funeral and related expenses. As the community grieves, the kindness and impact that Grant had on those around him have become evident, with many recalling him as a “great kid” who will be deeply missed.
