Fatal Urbana, Illinois home invasion shooting deaths of Darnell “DJ” Wicks and Melvin Braxton – Obituary

Authorities have identified 7-year-old Darnell “DJ” Wicks and 43-year-old Melvin Braxton as the victims of a deadly shooting that took place Saturday night in Urbana, Illinois.

 

According to Champaign County Coroner Laurie Brauer, Wicks was pronounced dead at 8:28 p.m. at Carle Foundation Hospital’s Emergency Department, while Braxton succumbed to his injuries in the operating room at 9:30 p.m. Autopsies for both victims are scheduled for early this week.

 

The Urbana Police Department reported that the shooting happened near Lanore Drive and Washington Street just after 7:30 p.m. Officers responded to the scene and found both victims with gunshot wounds. Investigators determined that the shooting stemmed from a home invasion.

 

The Criminal Investigations Division is leading the ongoing investigation. Authorities are asking anyone with information to call 217-384-2320.
