Fatal Mattoon, Illinois pedestrian crash death of Dylan Bellamy – Obituary

Authorities have confirmed that 22-year-old Dylan Bellamy lost his life after being struck by a vehicle while walking along Illinois Route 16 near Mattoon over the weekend.

Coles County Coroner Ed Schniers identified Bellamy as the victim, stating that an autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday. Bellamy had previously worked as a telecommunicator for the Coles County Sheriff’s Office before relocating to Wisconsin. The sheriff’s department expressed condolences on social media, asking the community to keep Bellamy and his colleagues in their thoughts.

Illinois State Police responded to the accident just after midnight east of I-57 in Coles County. Their investigation revealed that Bellamy, a Benton, Wisconsin resident, was walking in the right lane when a westbound 2013 Ford Taurus, driven by a 35-year-old Mattoon man, struck him. The driver was unharmed, as were two young girls who were also in the vehicle.

Following the initial collision, a second accident took place. A 2014 Ford Escape, driven by a 26-year-old woman from Mascoutah, was traveling west in the left lane and struck Bellamy again. Mattoon Police later cited the driver for DUI.

Bellamy was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities closed the westbound lane of Illinois Route 16 until 5:47 a.m. to investigate the crash. No further details have been released at this time.
