On Monday, February 10, 2025, a tragic accident in Carmi, Illinois, claimed the life of 46-year-old Joe A. Murphy. At approximately 7:16 a.m., White County Dispatch received a 911 call about a train-pedestrian collision.
Witnesses told police that Murphy, walking east, ignored the lowered crossing arms and active warning lights at the Stewart Street railroad crossing. Despite the train’s emergency whistle and the conductors’ attempt to stop, the train was unable to halt in time before striking Murphy, who had almost reached the east side of the tracks.
Murphy was pronounced dead at the scene by the White County Coroner. An autopsy is scheduled for later. Local authorities, including the police and fire departments, assisted at the scene.
