Ekam Sahni dies in fatal Newcastle shooting
Fatal Newcastle shooting death of Ekam Sahni – Obituary
Eighteen-year-old Ekam Sahni lost his life in a tragic shooting late at night at Bar Beach carpark in Newcastle, New South Wales. Authorities say the incident appears to have been a random act of violence.
Sahni, a local resident, was among two separate groups at the carpark near Merewether Beach around 11:40 p.m. when a white Volvo SUV arrived. According to police, a man exited the vehicle wielding a rifle and opened fire, striking Sahni in the upper torso before fleeing the scene.
Emergency responders attempted to save the teenager, but he succumbed to his injuries at the location. His body was later transported to John Hunter Hospital.
Investigators from the state’s homicide squad have joined the case, and two separate crime scenes have been cordoned off as part of the ongoing search for the shooter. Acting Superintendent Steve Benson stated that while there was a prior altercation at the site, there is no evidence linking the gunfire to that fight.
The white SUV used in the shooting had been reported stolen and was later found burnt out in Tingira Heights, roughly a 20-minute drive from the crime scene. Forensic teams are currently examining the vehicle for any clues.
A local witness reported that tensions escalated between Sahni and another group shortly before the shooting. He described the moment a man got out of the white SUV and fired a large rifle-style weapon after shouting at the group.
NSW Police Minister Yasmin Catley emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting law enforcement in addressing violent crime, saying such acts have no place in the community.
Authorities are asking anyone with information or dashcam footage from the area to contact police or submit a report online.
