Fatal Hempfield Route 30 car crash death of Nancy Duva – Obituary

Nancy Duva, 83, of Greensburg, was identified by Pennsylvania State Police as the motorist driving the wrong way on Route 30 in Hempfield, leading to a multi-vehicle accident on Wednesday evening.

Authorities say Duva was heading westbound in the eastbound lanes near the Cedar Street exit around 5:15 p.m. in her Subaru Crosstrek when she collided with two other vehicles: a Dodge Ram driven by Jace Bartsch, 20, of Wheeling, West Virginia, and a Hyundai Elantra driven by 27-year-old Kassidy Warfel of Latrobe. Both Bartsch and Warfel were traveling eastbound at the time of the crash.

Duva and Bartsch were taken to Forbes Hospital in Monroeville, while Warfel declined medical attention at the scene. No updates have been given regarding the conditions of Duva or Bartsch.

State Trooper Steve Limani highlighted the dangers of that section of Route 30, noting that limited visibility and high speeds drastically reduce a driver’s reaction time when faced with an oncoming vehicle traveling the wrong direction.

Emergency crews shut down the roadway for four hours to investigate and reconstruct the crash. That section of Route 30, which sees around 37,000 vehicles a day, was temporarily rerouted via Route 119 and other nearby roads.

Footage captured by another driver showed an SUV driving in the wrong direction before crashing into the pickup, both vehicles suffering extensive front-end damage.

This incident follows a broader national concern about the rise in wrong-way collisions. Between 2015 and 2018, AAA reported over 2,000 deaths nationwide from such crashes.
