Arvel Jones Sr., 51, was fatally shot by a Baltimore County police detective in Arbutus, Maryland, after reports alleged he was firing arrows at vehicles. Authorities confirmed that Detective Todd Weidel, a 28-year veteran of the force, was the officer who discharged his weapon during the encounter.
According to investigators, Jones had been seen wearing a black ski mask and using a bow and arrow to target passing cars on Leeds Avenue. Officers responded to the scene around 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday. During the confrontation, Weidel shot Jones. The detective was not wearing a body camera, and another officer on the scene only activated his camera after the incident.
Officials stated that both officers rendered medical aid until emergency services arrived and transported Jones to the hospital, where he later died. The event led to three nearby schools being placed on lockout as a precaution.
Jones’ son, Arvel Jones Jr., told WJZ-TV that his father may have been experiencing a mental health crisis at the time and insisted he was a peaceful man who would not intentionally harm anyone. The community has been shaken by the event, prompting further discussion around policing and mental health response.
