Brady Lee Murray, 46, has been identified as the man fatally shot by Decatur police officers following a reported theft at a Walmart store Tuesday night.
According to authorities, police were dispatched around 9:40 p.m. to the Walmart located off South U.S. Highway after receiving a call about an active theft. When officers arrived, they spotted a man fleeing the scene. A pursuit unfolded in the parking lot, during which officers discharged their weapons and struck the suspect.
Murray was given emergency medical attention at the scene before being transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Police stated that another individual was in a vehicle apparently waiting for Murray, but that person left the scene amid the gunfire. No officers were injured during the incident.
The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, a standard part of the department’s procedure. One officer reportedly had a year of service, while the other had been with the force for three years.
As of now, authorities have not clarified whether Murray was armed or what specific actions prompted the officers to use lethal force. The relationship between Murray and the person in the getaway vehicle also remains under investigation.
The case is still being actively investigated, and the names of the officers involved have not been made public.
