Five-year-old Brite Shalom Acoy has been identified as the young victim who lost her life following a violent shooting in Greenville County, South Carolina. The county coroner ruled her death a homicide.
Authorities said the tragic incident unfolded on Friday evening at the Belle Meade Apartments located on Fleetwood Drive. According to Greenville County Sheriff Hobart Lewis, twin children, both under the age of 10, were shot while inside their apartment. Sadly, Brite Shalom Acoy did not survive her injuries, while her twin sibling remains in critical condition.
An 18-year-old individual was also wounded in the shootout, sustaining a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the arm and is expected to recover.
Law enforcement reported that two groups were exchanging gunfire when the children and teenager were caught in the crossfire. Sheriff Lewis stated multiple individuals were involved and suggested that gang activity could be a possible factor in the shooting.
Officers arrested Shawnteza La Shay Sherman, 31, charging her with murder, two counts of attempted murder, and criminal conspiracy. A 16-year-old juvenile has also been taken into custody, facing charges including murder, two counts of attempted murder, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. The juvenile was apprehended at an apartment on Crest Lane and will be held at the Department of Juvenile Justice facility in Columbia.
The sheriff’s office emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and that they are seeking any additional suspects. Authorities urged community members with any knowledge of the incident to come forward and assist in the investigation, expressing frustration at the lack of cooperation so far.
Sheriff Lewis voiced his anger over the senseless violence, calling it a deeply infuriating act and vowing that all responsible parties will be pursued and brought to justice. Law enforcement teams continue to work tirelessly on the case throughout the weekend.
