Detective Joseph Azcona, a 26-year-old officer with the Newark Police Department, was fatally shot on Friday night in an incident that also left another officer injured. Authorities confirmed his death early Saturday morning at University Hospital.
Essex County officials reported that a 14-year-old boy was arrested in connection with the shooting. The suspect, who was also wounded, has been charged with murder, attempted murder, and illegal possession of weapons. Due to his age, his identity has not been disclosed.
Detective Azcona had served with the Newark Police Department for five years before his tragic death. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting is ongoing.
