Fatal Norfolk police shooting injury of Charlene Carey-Chavez – Obituary
On Friday, April 25, 2025, a Norfolk woman, Charlene Carey-Chavez, was shot by police after she allegedly pointed a weapon at officers.
The incident occurred in the 7600 block of Sewells Point Road around 1:55 p.m., where officers had been called to a scene involving a woman connected to a prior assault.
Police said that Carey-Chavez was carrying a large bag that they believed contained a weapon.
When officers instructed her to drop the bag, she reportedly ignored their commands and instead pulled a weapon from the bag, pointing it at the officers.
In response, police fired multiple shots, hitting Carey-Chavez. She was subsequently transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
As of Monday, April 28, Carey-Chavez, 37, faces charges of brandishing a firearm or an object resembling one, assault and battery, and grand larceny.
She remains in the hospital under treatment and will be taken to Norfolk City Jail after her release. The Virginia State Police are investigating the shooting. No officers were injured during the incident.
