Fatal Greenbriar police shooting death of Jamal Wali – Obituary

A 36-year-old man from Fairfax, identified as Jamal Wali, was fatally shot by police on Wednesday afternoon during a traffic stop in the Greenbriar area.

The incident unfolded when an officer, on traffic enforcement duty, spotted Wali speeding in a 1999 Toyota Corolla.

The officer initiated a traffic stop in the 4000 block of Meridian Lane, where Wali abruptly stopped his vehicle and immediately became combative.

Wali, who refused to provide identification, informed the officer that he was armed. As backup officers arrived, one of them, a veteran with 19 years of service, warned Wali to stop reaching for his firearm.

Despite the warning, Wali drew his gun from a holster and opened fire, striking two officers in their elbows. A third officer, who witnessed the gunfire, fired at Wali, fatally wounding him.

The two injured officers were treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Fair Oaks Hospital.

The officer who fatally shot Wali was placed on administrative leave while an investigation into the incident is conducted by the Major Crimes Bureau, alongside an internal review.

Body-cam footage from the scene is expected to be released within 30 days, in accordance with county policy.
