The Prince William County Police Department has identified 26-year-old Joseph Anthony Cassell as the man who died during an officer-involved shooting on April 26, 2025.

The incident occurred at the Westminster at Lake Ridge Senior Living Home in Woodbridge, Virginia, at approximately 9:58 AM.

Police were initially called to the scene regarding a man in crisis who was reportedly armed with a knife. Upon arriving at the location, officers encountered Cassell, who approached them with the weapon, ignoring commands to drop it.

The confrontation escalated when Cassell allegedly attacked a 91-year-old woman, prompting officers to discharge their firearms.

Both Cassell and the woman were given medical attention at the scene, but Cassell was pronounced dead at the scene, while the woman was transported to a hospital with serious injuries. She is expected to recover.

The investigation is ongoing, led by the Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT), and authorities are providing further updates as the situation develops.
