Anthony R. Virginia, 41, was shot and killed by Milwaukee police officers on Saturday during a response to a reported break-in at a business on North 32nd Street, according to the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Authorities stated that officers arrived at the scene after receiving a call about the burglary. The caller reported that one of the suspects had fired a weapon at them. When police confronted the suspects and ordered them to drop their firearms, Virginia was shot by officers, while a 34-year-old armed suspect was taken into custody.
The officer involved in the shooting is a 41-year-old veteran of the department with ten years of service. As per protocol, he has been placed on administrative duty pending further investigation.
The Wauwatosa Police Department is handling the inquiry into the shooting. Meanwhile, activists from the Milwaukee Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression have urged authorities to release body camera footage of the incident within 48 hours to Virginia’s family. Under department policy, the footage must be made available to the public within 15 days.
