A young child tragically lost his life Monday afternoon after being hit by a Boston school bus in the Hyde Park area, according to city officials.

The victim, identified by family members as Lens Arthur Joseph, was struck around 2:44 p.m. near the intersection of Washington Street and Glenwood Avenue.

Eyewitness Nathaniel Thomas, who lives nearby, said he saw the boy lying on the ground and rushed to assist him until emergency responders arrived. Thomas noted the boy appeared to be in serious condition and tried repositioning him to help him breathe more easily.

Family members explained that the 5-year-old kindergartener, who attended Up Academy in Dorchester, had been dropped off with his cousin on Washington Street instead of their normal stop on Glenwood Avenue.

Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox stated that the incident has prompted a thorough and ongoing investigation. Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden emphasized the complexity of the situation, indicating many unanswered questions remain.

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu and Superintendent Mary Skipper both expressed their condolences and sorrow, offering support to the affected family and school community. Other children on the bus were checked for injuries and transported to hospitals as a precaution.
