Matamata College has confirmed the passing of one of its students, Sarie Morton, who was struck by a train in Waikato yesterday.
In a statement shared on the school’s Facebook page, Board Presiding Member Craig Alexander and Principal Dr. Angela Sharples expressed their sorrow over the tragic loss.
“It is with deep sadness that we inform our school community of the sudden passing of one of our beloved students, Sarie Morton, following an incident after school yesterday,” they wrote.
They extended their condolences to Sarie’s family and friends during this difficult time.
Emergency services responded to the scene near the intersection of Firth Street and College Street around 3:15 p.m. Despite receiving medical attention, the student succumbed to her injuries at the site.
The school has chosen to remain open, offering professional support services to students and staff in need.
“As we navigate this sudden loss, we are deeply grateful for the outpouring of love and support from our community. Your kindness and compassion are greatly appreciated by Sarie’s family, friends, and all of us here at Matamata College,” the statement continued.
Authorities are conducting inquiries on behalf of the coroner, and WorkSafe has been notified of the incident.
