Fatal Philadelphia police shooting death of Jerome Cooper – Obituary
Jerome Cooper, 51, of Philadelphia, was killed by police after he allegedly shot a man during a carjacking, led officers on a multi-mile chase, and engaged in gunfire with pursuing officers.
The incident began on Monday, April 28, around 7 p.m. at a Public Storage lot on East Hunting Park Avenue, where Cooper shot a 32-year-old man before stealing his Toyota Camry. A witness, armed with his own weapon, exchanged fire with Cooper during the carjacking.
Cooper then sped off in the stolen car, continuing to shoot at officers. Police located the stolen vehicle just after 8 p.m., which led to a chase that ended when Cooper crashed into a tree on Roosevelt Boulevard.
After crashing, Cooper allegedly pointed his gun at officers, prompting seven officers to open fire, striking Cooper multiple times. He was transported to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The 32-year-old carjacking victim was hospitalized in stable condition, and no officers were injured. All seven officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative duty pending further investigation.
