Fatal Savannah police chase crash death of Darren Lewis – Obituary

A high-speed police pursuit in Savannah ended in tragedy Tuesday evening when 60-year-old Darren Lewis lost his life after being struck during the chase, officials confirmed.

Authorities reported that Liberty Parkway was temporarily shut down between Arcadian Street and Vassar Street due to the crash.

Witnesses in the area described seeing a vehicle speeding through the neighborhood before the fatal collision.

The Chatham County Coroner identified Lewis as the victim, stating that he was an innocent bystander in the incident. Savannah Mayor Van Johnson, who arrived at the crash site, called the situation heartbreaking and acknowledged the deep concern within the community.

Georgia State Patrol later confirmed that the individual responsible for the police chase was also a suspect in a shooting earlier that morning at Westlake Apartments, which left five people injured.

The suspect was taken into custody and booked into the Chatham County jail.

Authorities have since reopened the roads affected by the crash.
