Mathew ‘Mattie’ O’Brien dies in fatal South Tipperary farm incident

Fatal South Tipperary farm death of Mathew ‘Mattie’ O’Brien – Obituary

Mathew “Mattie” O’Brien, aged 64, was found dead on a farm near Ardfinnan, South Tipperary, on the morning of Tuesday, April 29th. Emergency responders arrived around 11:30 a.m., but O’Brien was pronounced dead at the scene.

Originally from Golden in County Tipperary, Mattie had been living with his partner in The Cross, Ardfinnan for several years. His body has been transferred to University Hospital Waterford, where a post-mortem examination is being conducted to assist in determining the cause of death.

Preliminary findings from Gardaí indicate no suspicion of foul play. One theory under consideration is that O’Brien may have suffered a fatal fall from a roof he was working on. Both the Health and Safety Authority and the local coroner have launched inquiries into the incident.

Locals have shared heartfelt tributes, remembering Mattie as a kind and sociable man. One mourner expressed, “He was such a lovely man,” while another recalled fond memories of his cheerful presence at the pub, adding, “We miss his banter and jokes.”

Mattie is survived by his partner Catherine, his brothers William, John, Dermot, and Tom, his sister Mary, and Catherine’s children—Catriona, James, and Joseph.

His body will lie in repose at Costigan’s Funeral Home in Cahir on Friday evening between 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. His requiem mass is set for Saturday, April 26th at 2:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Church, Cahir, followed by burial in the nearby cemetery.
