The tragic March 17 crash on northbound Highway 101 in Camarillo has claimed the lives of 21-year-old Dong Shan Ma and 21-year-old Mason W. Ryan, both residents of Goleta. Authorities reported that the two men were in a 2013 Volkswagen Jetta that had stopped in the center median near Carmen Drive. At around 3 a.m., a 2015 Ford Mustang collided with their vehicle from behind, igniting the Jetta in flames.
Ma died from blunt-force injuries to the head and chest, while Ryan succumbed to inhalation of combustion products and thermal injuries, according to the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office. The driver of the Mustang, a 19-year-old from Santa Barbara, survived the crash.
The collision caused significant traffic disruption, closing all northbound lanes of Highway 101 for several hours. Ryan’s family has since set up an obituary page, with plans for a memorial service expected to be announced soon. The California Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the accident.
