A high-speed police pursuit through several Southern California cities ended tragically Friday when 26-year-old Matyes Getachew died in a crash on the 210 Freeway in Los Angeles County.
Authorities say the chase began shortly after 10 a.m. in Camarillo, where Ventura County deputies attempted to stop a vehicle linked to a reported grand theft at a major department store. The driver, later identified as Getachew, fled instead of complying with the stop, leading officers on a pursuit that passed through Thousand Oaks and Simi Valley before California Highway Patrol officers took over.
During the pursuit, Getachew reportedly reached speeds exceeding 115 miles per hour. The chase came to a deadly conclusion when his vehicle slammed into the back of a truck in La Cañada Flintridge. The impact, which occurred on the eastbound 210 just west of State Route 2, severely damaged the front and side of Getachew’s car.
