Jonathan Braswell, a 50-year-old educator from Mobile County, tragically lost his life after being struck in a hit-and-run incident near Greenlawn Drive and Morningside Drive on April 29. He was reported missing on Friday, and authorities later confirmed his identity as the victim.

Police say Braswell had been walking in the area when he was hit by a vehicle. He was transported to a hospital for treatment but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

Investigators have identified both the driver and the vehicle involved. According to police, the driver initially remained at the scene until medical help arrived but left before officers could question them. The case is now under investigation by homicide detectives, and several individuals have come forward with information.

Braswell, a beloved teacher at Clarke-Shaw Magnet School, was known for coaching archery and teaching the “Project Lead the Way” course. He studied Social Studies and Secondary Education at the University of Alabama. He also previously taught at Semmes Middle School.

Former student Lesley Ford remembered him as a compassionate educator who fostered a supportive environment. “He created a safe place for us, especially for students who felt different. He cared deeply and made his classroom feel like home. He even turned off the overhead lights and used lamps because he knew fluorescent lights caused headaches,” Ford said. “He had a passion for classic rock, and everyone adored him. Even after moving on to other grades, students would return just to visit him.”

Authorities continue to investigate the incident and are urging anyone with more information to come forward.
