Fatal Greeley, Kansas car crash death of Ja’mon Gilstrap – Obituary
Ja’mon Gilstrap, a dedicated transportation department staff member for Tulsa Public Schools, was among the four Tulsa-area residents who were killed in a devastating car crash on Sunday, May 4, near Greeley, Kansas.
Gilstrap was traveling back from a youth basketball tournament with a group that included students and former educators when their vehicle was involved in a two-car collision on U.S. Highway 169 around 5:45 p.m. He tragically lost his life at the scene, according to school district officials.
Tulsa Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Ebony Johnson spoke of the immense sorrow felt by the school community, describing Gilstrap as a vital part of the team and someone who played an important role in students’ daily lives. His loss, she said, has left a deep void across the district.
In addition to Gilstrap, the crash also claimed the lives of Donald “DJ” Laster, a student from Booker T. Washington High School, and Wayne Walls, a former teacher and coach at Carver Middle School. A Union Public Schools ninth-grader also died in the accident, though that student has not yet been publicly named.
The Kansas Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the exact circumstances surrounding the crash. Four others in the other vehicle reportedly died, and one person was taken to a hospital with injuries.
Support services, including grief counselors and school psychologists, have been made available across Tulsa Public Schools to assist those impacted by this tragedy. The community continues to grieve the sudden and heartbreaking loss of Gilstrap and the others.
