Fatal Lewis & Clark County shooting death of Ty William Steinbach – Obituary

Authorities in Lewis & Clark County have confirmed that 64-year-old Ty William Steinbach was shot and killed in a tragic incident involving his brother, 61-year-old Scott Marvin Steinbach. The two were found dead on May 1, 2025, at a home situated north of Highway 200 near L&C Road, following a call made to emergency dispatch around 6:50 p.m.

Responding deputies discovered a fire had been set inside the house and located Ty’s body, along with evidence of gunshot wounds. Sheriff Leo Dutton revealed that Ty’s death has been ruled a homicide, with his brother Scott identified as the suspected shooter.

According to Sheriff Dutton, after fatally shooting Ty, Scott took his own life by gunshot. Before doing so, he reportedly doused himself in gasoline and started a fire inside the residence. The State Crime Lab in Missoula later confirmed Scott died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Their elderly parents were inside the home at the time of the incident. The mother attempted to put out the flames and suffered burn injuries. A worker at the home managed to remove Ty’s body from the fire, preventing it from being completely consumed by the flames.

Both parents survived, and the mother received medical attention for her injuries. Authorities continue to investigate the tragic sequence of events, believed to have stemmed from a family dispute.
