Fatal Hendricks County courthouse shooting death of Mark Vawter – Obituary

A tragic incident unfolded outside the Hendricks County Courthouse on Monday, May 5, 2025, when 65-year-old Mark Vawter of Plainfield, Indiana, was fatally shot by deputies. Vawter, who had recently experienced the loss of his two great-grandchildren in a February car crash, was involved in an altercation with law enforcement at approximately 12:55 p.m.

 

Vawter had reportedly been waiting outside the courthouse for the arrival of a van when he confronted two deputies, brandishing a firearm. The deputies, identified as Zachary Emmitt and Nathan Phillips, returned fire, striking Vawter, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Fortunately, no other individuals, including the deputies or inmates, were injured.

 

Indiana State Police are investigating the incident, and both deputies have been placed on administrative leave, in line with standard protocol. The courthouse scene has been secured, with authorities confirming no ongoing threat to the public.
