Fatal South Williamsport drowning death of Claue Schreffler-Algofera – Obituary

Authorities have identified the 10-year-old girl believed to have drowned in the Susquehanna River on Sunday as Claue Schreffler-Algofera, a South Williamsport resident. According to Borough Fire Chief Jeff Trammell, the young girl was swept away by the river’s current around 11 a.m. while playing near a concrete platform along the bike path with two other children and a woman.

The incident occurred west of Front and Winthrop Streets. Witnesses reported that Claue began drifting from shore before being pulled further out by the current. The woman accompanying the children entered the water in an attempt to rescue her but was carried over a nearby dam. She eventually reached the riverbank and was assisted by first responders and bystanders before being taken to UPMC Williamsport. Her condition remains unconfirmed.

The two other children involved in the incident managed to safely return to shore and were transported to the hospital for evaluation. Search efforts for Claue’s body resumed Monday with additional support expected from the North Central Pennsylvania Dive Recovery and K9 Search Team from Elk County.

At this stage, officials have shifted their efforts from rescue to recovery as they continue the search for Claue.
