Fatal Big Bar car crash death of Oliver Cox – Obituary

Nine-month-old Oliver Cox was found deceased in the Trinity River on May 6, following a tragic car crash involving his parents in Big Bar, California. The incident took place in the early morning of May 1, when a Lexus sedan carrying Oliver, his 19-year-old mother, and 21-year-old father veered off State Route 299, plummeting down an embankment into the river.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the mother was behind the wheel at the time. Both parents sustained moderate injuries and were transported to a hospital. Despite their efforts to escape the submerged vehicle and rescue their child, Oliver was swept away by the river’s current.

Authorities confirmed that neither drugs nor alcohol played a role in the crash, which remains under investigation.

Over the following days, a multi-agency team led by Trinity County Search and Rescue conducted an extensive search along the steep and rugged riverbanks, utilizing ground crews, boats, and aerial support. Many of the responders, themselves parents, expressed heartbreak over the circumstances.

Oliver’s body was located by a diver on May 6, and officials recovered him from the river. His family and rescuers alike mourned the devastating loss. Oliver’s aunt, Michelle Huskey, remembered him as a joyful baby who was always smiling and deeply attached to his mother.
