Fatal Port Orange shooting death of Daniel Lee Asseff – Obituary
Daniel Lee Asseff, 60, a long-time Port Orange resident, was identified as the man who shot two Walgreens employees before taking his own life on the evening of Wednesday, May 7. The violent incident occurred at the Walgreens located on Taylor Road around 5:30 p.m.
According to police, the shooting took place inside the store’s pharmacy area and was reportedly sparked by a customer dispute. Two employees were shot during the encounter. One suffered a torso wound and remains hospitalized in serious but stable condition. The second victim was shot in the foot and has since been released from medical care.
Authorities found Asseff in his vehicle in the parking lot shortly after the incident. As officers approached, they heard a single gunshot. Inside the vehicle, Asseff was discovered in the driver’s seat with a fatal self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
Asseff had lived for over two decades in the Waters Edge neighborhood and ran a business called “Under the Wave, Inc.,” which specialized in aquarium maintenance and custom installations. He also operated a mobile photography service named Daytona Photo Booth, LLC. Neighbors described him as kind and dependable, expressing shock over the events.
The Walgreens store remained closed following the shooting and is expected to reopen on Monday, May 12. Investigators are continuing to examine the incident, and the identities of the injured employees have not been made public.
