Curtis Russell dies in fatal Cushing shooting

Fatal Cushing shooting death of Curtis Russell – Obituary

Curtis Russell was shot and killed by law enforcement early Friday morning in Cushing, Oklahoma, after allegedly firing at officers during a high-speed chase that extended into Lincoln County.

The situation began around 1:30 a.m. when Cushing police stopped a vehicle and noticed a firearm inside. The driver, later identified as Curtis Russell, fled the scene, leading officers on a pursuit. The chase continued into Lincoln County, where deputies took over.

Authorities reported that during the pursuit, Russell fired at a deputy, forcing the deputy to retreat. More officers, including members of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, responded to the scene. According to officials, Russell again opened fire, prompting one trooper to return shots, fatally striking him.

Investigators later confirmed that Russell had several weapons in his possession at the time of the incident. The trooper involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard protocol during such investigations.

Russell’s actions and the deadly outcome have raised questions about the risks law enforcement face during traffic stops and high-speed pursuits, as well as the growing issue of armed confrontations during routine enforcement efforts.
