Mario Mason dies in fatal Oklahoma County jail incident – Monday, May 12, 2025
Fatal Oklahoma County jail death of Mario Mason – Obituary
Mario Mason, a 26-year-old detainee at the Oklahoma County Detention Center, was found unresponsive in his cell Monday evening and later died despite emergency medical efforts, officials reported.
The discovery was made by a detention officer during a routine welfare check at approximately 5:37 p.m. Jail staff, along with EMSA and the Oklahoma City Fire Department, administered life-saving procedures before transporting Mason to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:46 p.m.
Mason had been incarcerated since May 23, 2024, and was sentenced to life imprisonment on April 24, 2025, for first-degree murder. He was awaiting transfer to the Oklahoma Department of Corrections at the time of his death.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his passing. In accordance with jail protocol, all in-custody deaths are initially treated as homicides until the Oklahoma Medical Examiner determines the official cause.
Mason’s family has been informed of his death.
