Marc Fogle dies in fatal Vancouver stabbing by sheriff’s deputy

Fatal Vancouver stabbing death of Marc Fogle – Obituary

Marc Fogle, 54, a resident of Clackamas, was fatally stabbed during an encounter with a Clark County sheriff’s deputy following a suspected DUI-related crash in Vancouver, Washington.

The incident unfolded on the night of May 7 when deputies responded around 10:58 p.m. to a collision involving a vehicle that struck two parked cars near Northeast 14th Court and Northeast Minnehaha Street. Authorities suspected the driver, identified as Fogle, was under the influence.

After being taken into custody, Fogle was transported to the Washington State Patrol Scale House on Interstate 5 in Ridgefield for a breath test around 11:33 p.m., since the sheriff’s office lacks its own breathalyzer equipment.

While at the testing facility, a deputy radioed that he was engaged in a struggle with Fogle. According to reports, the deputy claimed that Fogle attempted to grab his firearm, prompting the deputy to stab him multiple times in defense.

Deputies administered emergency medical aid until Clark-Cowlitz Fire Rescue arrived, but Fogle was pronounced dead at the scene around 12:39 a.m. The Clark County Medical Examiner later confirmed he died from multiple stab wounds to the torso.

The deputy involved was identified as Bryson Layton, who joined the department in May 2023. Layton was initially placed on administrative leave but has since resumed patrol duties. He was not injured in the incident.

The Office of Independent Investigations (OII) is handling the case to ensure impartiality. Body camera and vehicle footage from the incident are expected to be released in the future.
