Fatal Evansville shooting death of Mekhi Anthony Maxwell – Obituary
Mekhi Anthony Maxwell, a 22-year-old man from Evansville, was shot and killed during a suspected home burglary on Tuesday, according to the Vanderburgh County Coroner’s Office. Authorities confirmed Maxwell’s death at the scene on Sweetser Avenue.
Police say Maxwell and two others reportedly forced their way into a residence in the 3000 block of Sweetser Avenue around 1:45 p.m. The homeowner’s son, who was inside at the time, confronted the intruders and opened fire using a personal handgun, striking Maxwell while the other two fled.
According to Evansville Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Anthony Aussieker, the resident reported the break-in and shooting to authorities, stating that three individuals had broken in and that one had been shot. The resident said the intruders were armed, dressed in all black with face coverings and gloves.
Maxwell died at the scene before emergency services could assist. The shooter has fully cooperated with law enforcement during the ongoing investigation. Officials have yet to publicly name the other two suspects, who remained at large as of Wednesday morning.
The incident prompted a heavy police presence in the area and caused nearby schools to enter secure mode as a precaution. Investigators do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the public. An autopsy for Maxwell is scheduled to take place on Thursday.
