Fatal Augusta County boating accident death of John Joseph Lacy, Jr. – Obituary

John Joseph Lacy, Jr., an 84-year-old resident of Waynesboro, Virginia, tragically lost his life in a boating accident on Tuesday in Augusta County. According to the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded on May 13, 2025, after reports came in that a man had submerged in the water near Mountain Side Lane in the Lyndhurst area and did not resurface.

 

Investigators explained that Lacy and a companion were on the lake attempting to move a floating dock when the boat they were in began taking on water and eventually overturned, throwing both men into the lake. While Lacy’s friend was able to escape the water, Lacy was not found alive.

 

Emergency crews from multiple departments, including Preston Yancey Fire Department, Augusta County Fire and Rescue, Waynesboro First Aid Crew, Waynesboro Fire Department, and New Hope Fire Department, quickly responded to the scene.

 

The Augusta County Sheriff’s Office expressed their deepest sympathies to Lacy’s family and friends and thanked all first responders, including the Virginia State Police, for their swift and professional efforts during this tragic event. The investigation remains ongoing.
