Fatal Tallmadge Township shooting death of Connor Lotterman – Obituary

Connor Lotterman, a 19-year-old student from Tallmadge Township and engineering major at Grand Valley State University, died after being shot in the head during a party on Friday, May 9.

Authorities say the gunfire erupted when a 20-year-old man discovered a firearm at a residence and discharged multiple bullets through the floor of an upstairs bedroom. Lotterman, who was not in the same room, was struck in the head by one of the rounds. He was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition and died the next day. Investigators later determined the shooting was accidental.

Police suspect alcohol played a role in the incident. While the shooter’s identity has not been made public, the Ottawa County Prosecutor’s Office is reviewing the case to determine if charges will be filed.

Lotterman was born in Grand Rapids in May 2005 to parents Steve and Maria Lotterman. The youngest of five siblings, he attended Hope Protestant Reformed Christian School and graduated from Covenant Christian High School in 2023.

Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, at Grace Protestant Reformed Church in Grand Rapids. Visitation is scheduled for May 15 and 16 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Georgetown Protestant Reformed Church in Hudsonville.
