Fatal Fremont County car crash death of Li Nie – Obituary
Li Nie, a 64-year-old resident of Arcadia, California, was among seven people who lost their lives in a catastrophic collision on U.S. Highway 20 in Fremont County, Idaho, on May 1. The Mercedes tour van in which Nie was traveling—operated by Ctour Holiday LLC and carrying international tourists near Yellowstone National Park—was struck head-on at about 7:15 p.m. when a Dodge Ram pickup crossed the center line.
The violent impact ignited the van, claiming the lives of six occupants: Li Nie; fellow passenger Aifeng Wan, 53, also from Arcadia; Ivana Wen, 28, of Milan, Italy; Jianping Li, 71, of Guangxi, China; Xiaoming Jiang, 66, of Guilin, China; and the van’s driver, Yu Zhang, 30, of Eastvale, California. The pickup driver, Isaih Moreno, 25, of Humble, Texas, was also killed, bringing the death toll to seven.
First responders and passing motorists rushed to aid survivors before the burning van was fully engulfed. Three critically injured passengers were airlifted—one to Bozeman, Montana, and two to Idaho Falls—while others with non-life-threatening injuries were transported by ambulance.
Idaho State Police investigators are still working to determine why the pickup veered into oncoming traffic, calling the case complex due to the number of fatalities and the involvement of foreign nationals. Fremont County Coroner Brenda Dye credited coordinated efforts with Ada County and state forensic experts for the accurate identification of victims and timely notification of their families.
U.S. Highway 20 remained closed for roughly seven hours as crews extinguished the fire, documented the scene, and cleared debris. Crash reconstruction analyses and laboratory tests are ongoing, and the investigation remains open.
