Luis del Toro, a 60-year-old Tucson resident, lost his life on Thursday morning while assisting a family friend with a flat tire on Interstate 19. According to his family, he was doing what he had dedicated his life to—helping others with roadside tire services.
Del Toro, the owner of LET Tire Shop on East Benson Highway, was known for his tire service work and community commitment. His son, also named Luis, described him as a hardworking, respected man and a devoted father.
Authorities stated that while del Toro was working on a disabled vehicle, he was struck by another car, triggering a multi-vehicle crash that involved five vehicles. One vehicle caught fire, and others were severely damaged, with some occupants trapped inside.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety reported that an elderly driver was behind the wheel of the vehicle that struck del Toro. That driver and another person were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No citations had been issued as of Friday.
The crash occurred around 9:30 a.m., closing the northbound lanes of I-19 until approximately 2 p.m. Emergency crews responded to a chaotic scene involving fire suppression and rescue operations.
Del Toro’s death marks a tragic loss for the Tucson community, especially for those who knew him as a generous and reliable friend and professional.
