Fatal Spartanburg County pedestrian crash death of Pernell Irvin Wofford – Obituary
Pernell Irvin Wofford, a 60-year-old man from Spartanburg, was struck and killed on Interstate 26 West in Spartanburg County early Tuesday morning. The fatal incident occurred near mile marker 44 around 5:50 a.m., according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Authorities say Wofford had exited his vehicle after being involved in a separate crash and was walking on the interstate when he was hit by a GMC pickup truck. Emergency personnel arrived on the scene and pronounced him dead at 6:19 a.m., according to the Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office.
The crash led to the closure of all westbound lanes of I-26 for nearly three hours. The road was fully reopened by 8:45 a.m. as officials completed their investigation and cleared the area.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is continuing to look into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
