Akash Banerjee dies in fatal Atlanta shooting
Fatal Atlanta shooting death of Akash Banerjee – Obituary
Akash Banerjee, a 22-year-old student at Georgia Tech, passed away Tuesday after being shot in the head during a confrontation at The Connector Apartments in Midtown Atlanta. Authorities believe the shooting was a premeditated act.
Surveillance footage released Wednesday shows a man of interest walking along the ninth floor of the apartment building, seemingly lying in wait for Banerjee before the encounter turned deadly Sunday evening. Atlanta police homicide commander Andrew Smith noted that the unidentified man had been inside the building prior to Banerjee’s arrival and may have been carrying a concealed weapon in his clothing.
According to Smith, the suspect had visited the property previously in search of Banerjee. Although police have confirmed there was a relationship between the two, they are still working to clarify the details of that connection.
Smith also mentioned that Banerjee had a prior criminal background, which detectives are examining for possible relevance to the case. However, no specific information has been shared publicly about those records.
Georgia Tech, located near the scene of the incident, issued a statement expressing sorrow over Banerjee’s death, offering condolences to his family and gratitude to medical personnel involved in his care.
The investigation remains active as police continue to gather information and search for the suspect.
