Fatal Essex Junction train accident death of Shiloh Malzac – Obituary

Shiloh Malzac, 44, of Essex Junction, lost his life late Tuesday night after being hit by a freight train, Essex Police reported. His body was discovered early Wednesday morning on the railroad tracks that run alongside Railroad Street, between Main Street and Maple Street.

Police were alerted to the scene at around 4:20 a.m. Upon investigation, authorities determined that a southbound New England Central Railroad train, consisting of 83 cars, struck Malzac at approximately 11:35 p.m. the previous evening. The train’s engineer reportedly did not realize the impact had occurred and continued the journey without stopping.

The incident led to the closure of Railroad Street for nearly three and a half hours while authorities examined the site. The scene was cleared and reopened to the public around 8 a.m. Train operations were temporarily halted during this period, and the Essex Westford School District was informed so students and families could avoid the area.

Support during the investigation came from the Essex Junction Fire Department, which managed traffic and assisted with cleanup efforts, and the Williston Police, who provided additional security and traffic control.

Malzac’s body was sent to the Chief Medical Examiner’s office for an autopsy. Authorities are asking for the public’s help and urge anyone who may have seen individuals near the tracks between 7:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday, or who may have relevant information, to reach out to the Essex Police.

The New England Central Railroad is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation.
