Fatal University of Wisconsin-Platteville shooting death of Kelsie Martin and Hallie Helms – Obituary

Kelsie Martin and Hallie Helms, both 22, lost their lives Monday in a tragic incident at Wilgus Hall, a residence hall on the University of Wisconsin-Platteville campus. The event occurred just days after the university’s graduation ceremonies.

Authorities have released minimal information, but sources reported to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that a shooting took place around 4 p.m. The campus was immediately placed under lockdown due to what was described as an “emergency situation.”

The lockdown was lifted just over an hour later, shortly after 5 p.m., when police determined there was no continued threat to campus safety, according to WMTV.

UW-Platteville Police Chief Joe Hallman noted that the case remains under active investigation and emphasized that few specifics could be released due to the developing nature of the situation.

At approximately 11 p.m., University Chancellor Dr. Tammy Evetovich confirmed the identities of the two victims, stating they were killed in what appeared to be a “targeted and isolated event,” as reported by WPR.

The campus community, home to about 6,500 students, is mourning the sudden and heartbreaking loss of the two young women as police continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
