Fatal Grant County UTV crash death of Mario Cardenas – Obituary

Mario Cardenas, a 27-year-old man from St. Landry, Louisiana, lost his life Wednesday in a UTV accident near Dickeyville, according to the Grant County Sheriff’s Office. The incident occurred on private land just off Oak Road in the Town of Paris. Authorities reported that Cardenas was driving a UTV downhill along the 4500 block of Oak Road when he lost control, causing the vehicle to roll down a muddy slope and overturn on its side, trapping him underneath.

He was discovered unresponsive about two hours after leaving on the UTV. Deputies confirmed that Cardenas was alone in the vehicle at the time of the crash and was not wearing a seatbelt. The Sheriff’s Office received the crash report around 5:20 p.m. Wednesday.

In a separate event on the same day before 8 p.m., another UTV rollover occurred on private property along West Lane in Paris Township. A 69-year-old man from Cuba City suffered a head injury after quickly turning his UTV, which then rolled over. He was able to walk back home and call for assistance before being transported to a hospital by Dickeyville EMS, where he was treated and released. Like Cardenas, the Cuba City man was not wearing a seatbelt during the crash.

Following these incidents, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources issued safety recommendations for UTV riders. They urged riders to wear helmets and seatbelts, avoid alcohol, adhere to speed limits and route guidelines, and inform others of their travel plans. Lt. Jacob Holsclaw, the DNR’s off-highway vehicle administrator, emphasized that many crashes are preventable through responsible riding and education.
