Fatal Lake Pueblo drowning death of Manuel DeJesus Villanueva Miranda – Obituary
Manuel DeJesus Villanueva Miranda, a 53-year-old resident of Colorado Springs, lost his life on May 14 after entering the waters of Lake Pueblo State Park in a heroic attempt to rescue his two children and their friends who were having trouble swimming.
According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife, Miranda entered the lake when he noticed the group of children struggling in turbulent conditions. Although the children were able to get out safely, Miranda submerged and did not resurface. Witnesses quickly jumped in to try to save him, and emergency services were alerted around 2:45 p.m.
Rangers arrived within minutes, and CPR was administered by bystanders, park personnel, and medics for 40 minutes. Despite their efforts, Miranda was pronounced dead at the scene by a coroner investigator.
The Pueblo County Coroner confirmed Miranda’s identity on May 16, describing the event as a swimming accident. Authorities noted that he was not wearing a life jacket and that the water was cold, in the upper 50s, with high winds contributing to the danger.
Park officials extended their sympathies to Miranda’s loved ones and emphasized the importance of water safety during the summer season at Lake Pueblo.
