Fatal New Orleans shooting death of Lee’Lani Brooks – Obituary
Nine-year-old Lee’Lani Brooks tragically lost her life in New Orleans on May 12 after being struck by a stray bullet while attempting to guide her younger siblings to safety during a gunfire exchange outside her home.
The young girl had been outside just before 2 p.m. when gunshots erupted nearby. According to police and local reports, she and her mother quickly rushed indoors. As Lee’Lani moved to shield her siblings, a bullet pierced through a window and fatally struck her in the head.
Emergency responders transported her to a nearby hospital where she was placed on life support. She was declared brain dead and passed away on May 16 after her family made the difficult decision to end life-sustaining measures.
Police arrested 19-year-old Evan Rogers, who now faces charges of attempted second-degree murder and illegal use of weapons. Authorities apprehended Rogers after a four-hour standoff at a hotel. A second individual has also been arrested in connection with the shooting, though their identity and charges remain undisclosed.
Lee’Lani’s family has created a GoFundMe page to help cover funeral expenses. Her mother, Letisha Johnson, described her as a joyful and caring child who took pride in protecting those around her. She was remembered for her warm smile, vibrant personality, and love for dancing, doing her makeup, and spending time with family.
On May 20, loved ones gathered for a balloon release in Lee’Lani’s honor. Community members continue to mourn her loss, celebrating her bravery and selflessness. Community activist Mike Willis called her “a hero,” and her mother asked the world to remember her daughter’s kind and courageous spirit.
