Fatal Greeley police shooting death of Sean Michael Ybarra – Obituary

Sean Michael Ybarra, 35, was shot and killed by a Greeley police officer on Wednesday, May 14, after reportedly refusing to drop a knife he was seen swinging at cars in a residential neighborhood.

 

The incident began when officers were called to investigate reports of a man wielding a knife near the 500 block of 16th Avenue. Authorities say the man, later identified as Ybarra, was acting aggressively toward passing vehicles.

 

Police eventually located him around the 1900 block of 2nd Street. Officials stated that when Ybarra did not comply with verbal commands to disarm, an officer discharged their weapon. Emergency responders performed CPR, but Ybarra was pronounced dead at 2:25 p.m.

 

The Weld County Coroner confirmed his identity, noting he was on parole at the time. No injuries were reported among officers or civilians. The name of the officer involved has not yet been released, and the investigation remains ongoing.
