Fatal Alamance County car crash death of Daniela Trejo Mendiola – Obituary
A man involved in a deadly hit-and-run that claimed the life of 17-year-old Daniela Trejo Mendiola has entered a guilty plea, nearly a year after the tragic incident in Alamance County, North Carolina.
Daniela was struck and killed on August 20, 2025, while walking outside a friend’s home on Oak Grove Church Road in Liberty. Authorities say 38-year-old Joshua Brown hit her with his vehicle, fled the scene, and returned roughly 15 minutes later in a different car. He was arrested two weeks later and charged in connection with the crash.
Daniela’s grieving family was present in court on Friday as Brown formally pleaded guilty. Her father, Daniel, expressed frustration and sorrow, stating that the plea deal denied their family the trial they hoped would bring justice and accountability. Daniela’s mother broke down in tears during the hearing as prosecutors recounted the events of that night.
According to troopers, had Brown stopped to call emergency services immediately after the crash, Daniela might have survived. Her father emphasized that she was alive for over 40 minutes after being hit and might have been saved.
Daniela had recently turned 17 and dreamed of becoming a doctor. Her father recalled her aspirations with heartbreak, saying her future was stolen in an instant.
Judge Andrew Hanford confirmed Brown’s plea, with Brown acknowledging his guilt in court. The plea agreement also led to the dismissal of a window tint violation. Brown now faces up to 59 months in prison, with sentencing set for June 30.
Daniela’s family has vowed to continue fighting for justice in her name, drawing strength from the community support they’ve received throughout the legal process.
