Fatal Lexington County car crash death of Claire Pierce and Eliza Udy – Obituary

Claire Ann Pierce, 22, and Eliza Jane Udy, 21, lost their lives Sunday night following a collision allegedly caused by a drunk driver at the junction of Neely Wingard and Ben Franklin roads in Lexington County, South Carolina, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Claire’s father, David Pierce, expressed his profound sorrow, lamenting the future moments he will now miss with his daughter — from walking her down the aisle to sharing a dance at her wedding. He described the pain as far beyond anything he’s experienced, even reflecting on the struggles of raising her as a single parent from infancy.

Eliza’s father, Kevin Udy, remembered his daughter as a radiant and inspirational young woman. He described her as a passionate ballerina, a motorcycle enthusiast, and a loyal friend whose unconditional love left a lasting impact on many lives. He emphasized that her legacy lives on through the way she treated others and the joy she brought.

Their deaths have amplified demands for more stringent measures against drunk driving. Kimberly Cockrell of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) highlighted that tragedies like these are entirely avoidable and stressed the importance of having a transportation plan, especially during holiday weekends. She urged people to take advantage of ride-sharing services if they plan to drink.

Authorities identified the driver suspected of causing the crash as 37-year-old Able Ramirez-Ortega of West Columbia. He has been charged with two counts of felony DUI and is being held at the Lexington County Detention Center.
