Fatal Coon Rapids shooting death of Robert Edward Davis – Obituary

Robert Edward Davis, age 66, died after being shot by police in Coon Rapids during an incident described by authorities as a domestic disturbance.

The shooting happened around noon on Wednesday at a residence on the 300 block of 111th Avenue NW. Davis’ family later identified him as the man who was shot by officers.

According to police reports, a woman called authorities saying she had been cut with a knife by a man inside the home. Another man was also present. When officers arrived, they tried to peacefully resolve the situation from outside the house. They could hear a woman screaming from inside.

The woman and the other man left the residence shortly afterward, with the woman taken to the hospital for treatment. The suspect, armed with a knife, refused to come out or surrender. Officers first used less-lethal ammunition in an attempt to subdue him.

When Davis moved deeper inside the home, officers followed to detain him, but he continued wielding the knife. Additional less-lethal rounds were fired. At one point, as Davis advanced toward the officers, a third officer shot him with a firearm. A fourth officer then deployed a Taser while Davis was trying to get up.

Medical aid was given on scene before he was transported to Mercy Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Family members said Davis was suffering from a brain tumor and insisted the incident was not related to domestic abuse. They described him as a kind man who had been ill.

The police investigation remains ongoing, with officers involved placed on administrative leave. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has been called to assist with the case.
