Fatal Thurmont kayaking death of Sean Chilson – Obituary

Sean Chilson, 34, a former U.S. Marine and avid outdoorsman, was found dead in the Monocacy River nearly a week after he vanished while kayaking during severe weather in Frederick County, Maryland.

Chilson was last seen on May 14 after his kayak and equipment were spotted floating downstream amid rising water levels caused by heavy rainfall and flooding throughout western Maryland. Authorities began a multi-day search effort, which ended Tuesday evening when his body was located near Biggs Ford Bridge, according to Maryland Natural Resources Police.

Chilson had served in the Marines in Okinawa and was currently working as a sales manager at Century Dodge/Chrysler/Ram/Jeep in Frederick County. His brother, Seth Chilson, confirmed his death in a social media post, describing Sean as a man with a vibrant spirit, a love for the outdoors, and a smile that brightened any room.

During the search, family members emphasized that Chilson was a skilled and experienced kayaker who had a deep appreciation for nature and adventure.

Authorities have cautioned residents about the dangers of high water levels heading into Memorial Day weekend, with swift water rescue teams preparing to patrol high-risk areas like the Potomac River near Great Falls.

Chilson is remembered by family and friends as a kind-hearted and passionate individual who lived life to the fullest.
